CARBON DIOXIDE (CO2)

The fire protection industry has long recognized the necessity to classify fires according to the various types of burning materials encountered (and consequently the proper means of extinguishment). Besides knowing what type of fire you are likely to encounter, it is important to know what kind of extinguishing agent should be utilized. Only certain extinguishants will work on certain kinds of fires. Others can and will aggravate the situation, causing an even more critical problem. For example water-type fire extinguishants cannot be used on electrical fires due to the extreme conductivity of electricity by water. The four main classes of fires are as follows:

Class A Fires: Fires in ordinary combustible materials such as wood, cloth, paper, rubber and many plastics.

  • Typical Class A Fires:
    • Dust Collectors
    • Museums / Art Gallaries
    • Record Storage
    • Fur Storage Vaults
    • Night Depositories
    • Food Processing Equipment

Class B Fires: Fires in flammable liquids, combustible liquids, petroleum greases, tars, oils, oil-based paints, solvents, lacquers, alcohols, and flammable gases.

  • Typical Applications concerned with Class B Fires:
    • Flammable Liquid Storage
    • Chemical Processing Equipment
    • Dip Tanks/Quench Operations
    • Spray Booths
    • Paint Lockers
    • Industrial Ovens
    • Printing Presses
    • Gas Turbine Generators
    • Diesel Generators
    • Coating Machines
    • Hydraulic Pump Units
    • Engine Rooms

Class C Fires: Fires involving energized electrical equipment, including appliances, wiring, circuit breakers, and fuse boxes.

  • Typical Applications concerned with Class C Fires
    • Electrical Equipment
    • Electric Discharge Machines (EDM)
    • Underfloor Areas
    • Control Rooms
    • Telecommunications Facilities
    • Transformer / Switchgear Rooms
